8 Packing Tips for Stress-Free Moving

Moving is probably most people’s least favorite thing, but we all have to do it every once in a while. Here are some packing tips to make your next move go smoothly.

1. Start As Soon as Possible

Packing almost always takes longer than you think. Start packing as soon as you know you are moving. Aim for at least one box a day, starting with items you use the least.

Which leads to…

2. Buy More Packing Supplies Than You Think You’ll Need

I’ve helped countless people move over the past 40 years. Every single move involved a last minute scramble for extra boxes or packing tape.

Buy plenty of boxes, packing tape, paper and bubble wrap – more than you think you’ll need. Oftentimes, people buy more than they think they’ll need and still don’t end up with enough.

3. Get Creative

Packing supplies don’t need to be expensive. Ask for boxes at local stores. If you start packing early, it gives you plenty of time to collect boxes as well.

Use blankets, towels, sheets and even socks to protect fragile items.

4. Dedicate Each Box to One Room

You may be tempted to pack bedroom items in with living room items. It’s all stuff you can pack early, so why not put it all in the same box?

Make unpacking easier by only packing items from one room in a box. Keep an open box in each room so that you can grab items from various rooms and put them in their respective boxes.

5. Label Your Boxes

Label boxes with the room and contents. This will help the movers put the boxes in the right place, and will make it easier for you to find things when you’re unpacking.

Since the boxes will be stacked, be sure to place labels on the tops and sides to avoid the labels being buried. If you want to get really organized, use different color labels or markers for each room.

6. Distribute Weight Evenly

Pack one layer of heavy items on the bottom of each box and a light layer on the top. This will distribute weight more evenly across the boxes, which makes them easier to carry. It also ensures the lighter, more fragile items are better protected.

7. Purge

Moving is a great time to get rid of things you don’t need. Before you pack something, ask yourself if you really need it. Do you really need that fondue pot that’s been sitting in the back of the cupboard for 3 years?

Donate unwanted items to charity or have a garage sale.

8. Keep A Few Empty Boxes for Moving Day

Set aside a few boxes for the big day. Use them to carry essential items that you weren’t able to pack—toothpaste, coffee maker, cleaning supplies, etc.
